The “Jinlan Qi” refers to a collective of women spanning southern China, from Jiangyong in Hunan to Hui’an in Quanzhou and the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong. These women, unrelated by blood, formed sworn sisterhoods or same-sex romantic partnerships, pledging either to remain unmarried for life or to never return to their husbands’ households after marriage. Such collectives flourished particularly during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican era in southern China. In Hui’an County, there were even instances of women in the Jinlan Pact committing collective suicide. Rejected by the dominant culture of the time, they received little attention or recognition, leaving behind limited historical records and occupying an ambiguous position in historical narratives. The relationships they represented were similarly obscure and elusive.

Based on this, I embarked on a two-part creative project. The first part uses land and vessels as metaphors for flesh and body. I crafted a series of handmade vessels and clay pots using a mixture of clay and soil from Hui’an, embedding historical references to the “Jinlan Pact” within or on the surfaces of these works. The second part consists of a series of staged photographs, attempting through imagination and fiction to recreate the mysterious rituals of the Jinlan Pact and the ambiguous bonds between women.
