The short film, titled Tooth Impaction, serves as a documentation of the journey of a wisdom tooth. It captures its initial emergence, accompanied by pain and inflammation, followed by the extraction process and subsequent healing of the wound. The creator of the film has meticulously edited her personal reflections, specific scenes, and performances into a cohesive video.
Throughout the narration, which is presented in the first person, the artist reflects on her experience with wisdom teeth. The camera constantly shifts between various scenes, including a convenience store, playground, road, bedroom, and studio. The common thread in all these scenes is the artist’s performance, consistently portraying her consumption of oranges on different occasions.
Towards the conclusion of the video, the monologue expresses, “This big hole was healing so fast that I could feel it getting smaller every day. Then suddenly, one day, I noticed that the hole was gone, and I don’t even know what day it healed. There was no trace of it left, not one bit. There were times when I wondered to myself, did I really have this wisdom tooth? Like now, I’m rambling on and on about this, how do you know if I’m telling the truth or not?”
Through this, the artist discusses the boundaries between the familiar and the unfamiliar, and questions the authenticity of memory.
